How smart keys talk to the car you drive

Smart keys (also called proximity keys, PEPS fobs, or push-to-start fobs) communicate wirelessly with your vehicle's PEPS module (Passive Entry Passive Start). When you walk up with the fob in your pocket, the car wakes up and lets you unlock by touch. Sit down, push the brake, push the start button, and the engine cranks. No metal key turning required.

Programming a smart fob is digital, not mechanical. The fob's unique transponder ID is written to the vehicle's PEPS memory through the OBD-II port using dealer-level diagnostic tools. For 2014 to 2018 vehicles, this is a straightforward 30 to 45 minute process. For 2019 and newer, especially European luxury, the OEM security code must be fetched through NASTF VSP authorized channels.

A transponder key is a metal key with an embedded chip you turn in the ignition. A smart key (also called proximity key, PEPS, or push-to-start fob) is a wireless fob that the car detects when you walk up to it. You push a button to start the engine. Smart keys are standard on most 2014 and newer vehicles.
You get the total on the phone before anyone is dispatched, and that number does not move once we arrive. Which job it actually is decides the figure: a lockout, a duplicate, a key cut from nothing. Hardware matters, and on a car key so do the make, the model and the year. After hours, weekends and federal holidays carry a surcharge we say out loud on the same call. Yes, this is the all-keys-lost scenario. The process is the same as standard programming plus an immobilizer reset code from the manufacturer. It is its own published line, set by the make, the model and the year. See our Lost Car Key Replacement page.
Most smart keys have a hidden mechanical emergency key blade you can pull out to unlock the door. Once inside, hold the smart key directly against the start button (or a specific spot on the steering column) to start the engine. We can replace the CR2032 battery on-site if you need it.
Water damage to the smart key circuit usually means replacement. We supply OEM-equivalent fobs and program them on-site. It is billed on the standard smart proximity line, set by the make, the model and the year.

Yes. There is no separate reprogramming line on our price list. While a working key or fob still exists, re-pairing is duplication work, set by the make, the model and the year. It is cheaper than buying a new fob when yours is physically intact.
