A new deadbolt

Keyed Alike, In Depth

Keying a house alike: one key for every door, and what has to match first

Keyed alike means several locks answer to the same key. It is not a master key system: in a master-keyed set each lock keeps its own change key and a master opens them all, which takes an extra spacer pin in each chamber. Keyed alike is simpler, with one set of cuts in every cylinder and no key stronger than another. For a house it turns a ring of four or five keys into one, covering the front and back doors, a side or basement door, and the knob and deadbolt on the same door. Everything starts with the keyway, the shape of the slot the key slides into. A key only operates a cylinder with the same keyway, and the profiles on Schlage and Kwikset residential locks, SC1 and KW1, do not take each other's keys. The quick check is to slide the key you want to keep into every lock: where it enters, that cylinder can be re-pinned to it; where it does not, that cylinder or the whole lock has to change to the chosen keyway.

Then comes the key itself. It can be one you already carry, if its cuts are not worn, or a new combination chosen for the job. Schlage stamps a five-digit key code on the back of its keys, and new Schlage locks can be ordered keyed alike or rekeyed to that code. Kwikset SmartKey cylinders reset to any KW1 key with their tool and a working key, and since October 2020 Kwikset also sells SmartKey locks in the SC1 keyway, which can be keyed to existing SC1 locks. Inside each pin-tumbler cylinder, the technician sets the key pins to the chosen cuts so the pin stacks meet the shear line for that key and no other.

One key is a convenience with one cost: lose it and every door it opens is exposed, so a lost key means rekeying the whole set in one visit, and it pays to know how many copies exist. Restricted high-security cylinders can be keyed alike too, but only within their own keyway and through the channel that controls the blanks. Count the cylinders
Every keyed lock is a cylinder to re-pin: a door with a knob and a deadbolt counts twice. Include the side door, the basement door and any keyed storm door. The count and the brands set the quote on the call.

Read the brand on each lock
The name on the key bow or on the lock face points to the keyway. Mixed brands mean at least one cylinder or lock changes, and the dispatcher prices that part separately so you can decide before anyone drives over.

Choose the key that stays
An existing key in good shape becomes the pattern, or a fresh combination is cut for the job. A key with worn cuts is not used as the pattern; a new key is cut to the correct depths instead.

Re-pin, then test every door
Each cylinder is re-pinned to the chosen key and reinstalled. Every new copy is tried in every lock, with the door open and again closed against the strike, before the technician packs up.

Every key gone

The key code linked to the VIN gives the blade its cuts, the immobilizer learns a new chip, and the lost keys are erased where the system allows. At the car, the technician asks to see the vehicle title or registration together with a photo ID showing the same name, and the route for that model year is settled on the phone. Fobs and push-button starts

An online-bought fob works once its FCC ID, operating frequency and part number line up with the vehicle (what to check). A sound fob that forgot the car is paired to it again, and one that keeps failing is swapped for a new fob with a warranty (deprogrammed or broken).
