Kia's own service bulletins describe certain cars as possibly built without an engine immobilizer, and they draw the line by production date rather than model year. That single fact changes a Kia key more than any other: a car without an immobilizer takes a mechanical key and a remote, a car with one takes a key taught with its PIN, and a car that received Kia's anti-theft software needs its fob to arm and disarm the new logic. Kia filed a series of service bulletins with NHTSA titled Anti-Theft S/W Logic Upgrade, each for vehicles "which may not be equipped with an immobilizer", and each bounded by production dates. CS2301 covers certain 2021-2022 K5s built from March 27, 2020 to December 21, 2021. CS2302 covers the Sportage SL built from May 6, 2010 to November 16, 2015 and the QL built from December 10, 2015 to December 7, 2021, and its ROM table marks both "IMMO: No". CS2303 through CS2309 do the same for the Optima, Sorento, Forte, Soul, Rio, Sedona and the 2021-2022 Seltos. Every one of them says certain or some vehicles, so two Kias with the same badge and year can differ.

What the software adds, in Kia's words, is anti-theft ignition start logic that activates when the vehicle is locked. Kia's Rio bulletin spells out the consequence: the car must be locked with the key fob, and from then on the fob is what arms and disarms the anti-theft system. Per the IIHS, an updated car will start only when the owner's key, or an identical duplicate, is in the ignition. Dealers apply it by reflashing the IBU or BCM (the IPM on the Sorento) with Kia's KDS ECU Upgrade function, then clear trouble codes such as EPS, ESC and TPMS that the reflash may set. Kia's owner letters offered it free for 18 months, with deadlines of August 1, 2024 for the Sportage and November 1, 2024 for the Forte. For a locksmith, the lesson is short: on an upgraded Kia, a spare is a cut key and a paired fob together.

The update had side effects that Kia documented. On cars with a Kia remote start accessory it could trigger the burglar alarm, and genuine Kia remote starters could sound five inadvertent honks, fixed under bulletin CS2310 with a module software update that excludes non-Kia modules. Rio SC cars upgraded on or before September 14, 2023 received the wrong software version and need CS2307B1. Eligibility itself depended on the factory alarm, as a Kia letter to Rio owners explains.

Where a Kia does have an immobilizer, keys are taught with a PIN. The Sportage SL service manual asks for a six-digit PIN, shuts teaching down for sixty minutes once three wrong PINs are entered, accepts up to eight keys, and requires every key to be taught again when the engine computer is replaced with a virgin or neutral unit. The Sportage QL manual cuts the ceiling to four keys, notes that disconnecting the battery does not shorten the one-hour block, and describes a four-digit user password for limp-home starting that has to be taught in advance. On KGIS, Kia's technical information site, key and PIN codes are released only after the requester's credentials are documented the way NASTF's Vehicle Security Professional policies require, which is the channel 4Keys' NASTF VSP authorization opens. Beyond the codes, 4Keys holds a subscription to KDS, the Kia Diagnostic System dealers use, and programs original (OEM) Kia keys and fobs. According to the IIHS, immobilizers were standard on every Hyundai and Kia model by 2023, and on 84% of their 2022 models.

Kia's smart keys follow the same split. The 2025 Seltos owner's manual describes a folding key immobilizer system and a smart key immobilizer system, with a mechanical key that comes out of the smart key; it tells owners to consult an authorized Kia dealer for extra or lost keys, which is owner-facing wording, since the same codes reach a NASTF VSP locksmith. It also warns that with an aftermarket ignition key the switch may not return to ON after START, a reason to match any key you buy to the car before it is cut. Key vendors list the Seltos 2022-2024 smart key, part number 95440-Q5410, with an NXP AES 128-bit chip, and the Sorento 2021-2023 smart key, 95440-P2010, with Hitag AES (ID4A).
