Ignition stuck or worn? We fix it without towing.

A failed ignition does not need a tow truck and a week at the dealer. We diagnose and replace the cylinder or PEPS module on-site in 60 to 120 minutes.

Ignition Repair

Why ignitions fail and how to fix them right

An ignition cylinder is a mechanical assembly with metal wafers, springs, and a code-cut tumbler. Over years of daily use, the wafers wear, springs lose tension, and the assembly jams. Symptoms: key turns hard, falls out, sticks halfway, or just refuses. The dealer fix involves towing your vehicle in, charging for the tow, and keeping the car for 2 to 5 days at $150 to $300 per hour labor.

Our mobile fix: tech arrives in 15 to 30 minutes, removes the steering column trim, replaces the cylinder with an OEM-equivalent unit, cuts and programs a new key if the cylinder uses a different code, tests the engine start, and hands you a receipt. Total: 60 to 120 minutes on-site, no tow.

For modern push-to-start systems, the equivalent failure is in the PEPS module (Passive Entry Passive Start). Same mobile process, different hardware. For Mercedes ESL or BMW EWS module failures, NASTF VSP authorization is required to legally access the OEM module data. Read about NASTF VSP here.

Common Symptoms

Signs your ignition needs work

Key turns hard or sticks

Worn wafers and springs make the cylinder rotate stiffly or jam halfway. Common on 100k+ mile vehicles.

Key falls out while driving

Tumbler wear lets the key release at the ON position. Engine still runs but the key is loose.

Cranks but will not start

Immobilizer or EWS/ESL module rejecting the key signal. Diagnostic needed before cylinder swap.

Steering wheel will not unlock

ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) failure on Mercedes and similar. OEM module work needed.
How It Works

Six steps from stuck to starting

  1. 1

    Diagnostic on-site

Tech verifies whether the failure is mechanical (cylinder, wafers) or electronic (immobilizer, ESL, EWS).

  2. 2

    Quote confirmed on the phone

Full price quoted before any work starts. No on-site surprise upcharges.

  3. 3

    Steering column accessed

Trim panels removed carefully to reach the cylinder or PEPS module without scratches.

  4. 4

    Cylinder or module replaced

OEM-equivalent cylinder installed, or PEPS module reflashed and re-paired to the smart key.

  5. 5

Key cut and programmed if needed

If the new cylinder uses a different key code, we cut and program a new key on the same visit.

  6. 6

    Full function test

We test engine crank, lock cylinder rotation, steering wheel unlock, and key removal. Receipt emailed.

FAQ - Ignition Repair FAQ

Got questions? We have answers. If you don't see your question below, call us anytime - we're available 24/7.

Range: $150 to $450 for most domestic and Asian vehicles, including cylinder removal, replacement, and key re-pairing. Mercedes ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) and BMW EWS (Electronic Immobilizer) repairs run $400 to $900 because of OEM module work. Full price quoted by phone before the van leaves.
Key turns hard or sticks halfway. Key turns but does not crank the engine. Key falls out while running. Ignition is loose or wobbly in the column. Steering wheel will not unlock when you turn the key. All of these mean the cylinder, wafers, or electronic lock needs service.
Yes, that is our default. We come to your driveway, parking lot, or wherever the car is stuck and replace the cylinder on-site. The dealer tows you in, charges for the tow, then keeps the car for 2 to 5 days. Our process is 60 to 120 minutes mobile.
Yes. Mercedes Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) on W203, W204, W210, W211, W212, plus BMW Electronic Immobilizer (EWS) on E46, E60, E90, F10, F30 are common failures we handle on-site. NASTF VSP authorization is required for these because of the OEM module coding. Repair runs $400 to $900.
Sometimes. If the cylinder is replaced with one that requires a new key code, we cut and program a new key on the same visit. Some replacements use the existing key without reprogramming. We tell you which on the phone before we dispatch.
That is a broken key extraction, not a full ignition repair. We remove the broken piece without drilling. See our Broken Key Extraction page. If the cylinder was damaged in the process, we replace it on the same visit.
Yes. That symptom usually means the immobilizer is rejecting the key signal, not a mechanical cylinder failure. We diagnose on-site with OBD-II tools and either re-pair the key, replace the immobilizer module, or replace the cylinder if it is mechanically worn.
Yes. Push-to-start systems use a PEPS module, not a mechanical cylinder, but the module can fail, jam, or de-sync from the smart key. We diagnose and repair on-site. Common on 2014 and newer Camry, Accord, F-150, Silverado, Sonata.
Yes. Florida operations as Qorinca LLC, License #LK-094576. Georgia operations as 4Keys Locksmith LLC, registered with the Georgia Secretary of State. ALOA-certified, NASTF VSP authorized for OEM module work.
