Why DIY extraction makes it worse

A broken car key in a lock cylinder is a 95% extraction job and a 5% cylinder replacement job, but the wrong DIY attempt flips that ratio fast. Pliers slip and push the piece deeper. Paperclips bend and jam against the wafers. Glue and adhesives bond the broken piece to the cylinder. Forced rotation can shear the wafers and turn a simple extraction into a full cylinder replacement, which is a different and more expensive job.

Professional extraction uses thin wire hooks and broken-key extractor tools matched to the specific cylinder geometry, with the keyway cleared rather than oiled. We pull the piece out cleanly in 5 to 15 minutes. The cylinder remains intact and usable.

    Tech inspects the broken key position, cylinder type, and how deep the piece is lodged.

    Keyway cleared, not oiled

    Grit and any oil already in the keyway are cleared so the extractor can grip the fragment. Penetrating oil and WD-40 are not used: they are solvents and water displacers that make the fragment slip and pack the wafer stack with grit.

    Extractor tool inserted

    Thin wire hook or extractor pliers designed for the specific cylinder geometry.

    Broken key pulled out cleanly without drilling, scratching, or damaging the wafers.

There is no second appointment and no tow. Bear in mind these are two services on one invoice, the extraction and the new key, and the dispatcher adds them together and gives you the single total on the phone.

Yes. Door and trunk cylinders are the second and third most common places a key snaps, usually from forcing a lock that is worn, rusted, or stiff from disuse. The extractor tools are the same family as the ignition ones, matched to the smaller cylinder geometry, and we work without removing the door panel or the trunk trim in most cases. Glove box and center console cylinders too.
Push-to-start vehicles do not have a traditional ignition cylinder, but they do have door locks and trunk locks where a key blade can still break. We extract from those. The push-button start itself does not have a key slot.
