Key snapped off in the lock? Do not try to dig it out.

Digging at a broken key with pliers, paperclips, or screwdrivers usually pushes the piece deeper and ruins the cylinder. We have the right extractor tools and 15 to 30 minute response.

Broken Key Extraction

Why DIY extraction makes it worse

A broken car key in a lock cylinder is a 95% extraction job and a 5% cylinder replacement job, but the wrong DIY attempt flips that ratio fast. Pliers slip and push the piece deeper. Paperclips bend and jam against the wafers. Glue and adhesives bond the broken piece to the cylinder. Forced rotation can shear the wafers and require a full cylinder replacement at $150 to $450.

Professional extraction uses thin wire hooks, broken-key extractor pliers, and penetrating lubricants matched to the specific cylinder geometry. We pull the piece out cleanly in 5 to 15 minutes. The cylinder remains intact and usable.

If your original key broke and you do not have a spare, we can cut a new key on the same visit. See Lost Car Key Replacement for the combined process.

Where Keys Break

Lock locations we extract from

Ignition cylinder

Most common. Worn ignition + tired metal key = snap. We extract without column disassembly.

Door lock cylinder

Snap from forcing a worn or frozen door lock. Side panels not removed unless needed.

Trunk and hatch lock

Old keys on trunk locks snap from rust or wear. Extraction without trunk panel removal.

Glove box and console

Less common but happens. Same extraction process, smaller cylinder.
How It Works

Five steps from broken piece to clean lock

  1. 1

    Lock assessment

Tech inspects the broken key position, cylinder type, and how deep the piece is lodged.

  2. 2

    Lubricant applied

Penetrating lubricant relaxes the wafers and gives the broken piece room to move.

  3. 3

    Extractor tool inserted

Thin wire hook or extractor pliers designed for the specific cylinder geometry.

  4. 4

    Piece removed

Broken key pulled out cleanly without drilling, scratching, or damaging the wafers.

  5. 5

Cylinder test and key replacement if needed

We verify the cylinder still rotates correctly. If you need a replacement key, we cut it on-site.

Range: $50 to $150 for most domestic and Asian vehicles. European luxury can run higher ($100 to $250) because the cylinder geometry is more complex. If the cylinder is damaged during extraction (rare with our tools), cylinder replacement is quoted separately.
Yes, that is the entire point of professional extraction. We use broken-key extractor tools (thin wire hooks and pliers designed for the specific cylinder geometry) to pull the broken piece out without drilling, scratching, or damaging the wafers. The cylinder stays usable.
Typical response is 15 to 30 minutes across Miami-Dade and Metro Atlanta. Live dispatcher 24/7. Faster on weekdays during daytime, slightly slower during peak traffic or overnight.
Yes, eventually. Modern vehicles have key-out detection that turns off accessories. But you should not drive with a broken key piece in the ignition because it can damage the lock cylinder permanently. Park safely and call us.
Yes. If you have only one key and it just broke, we extract the piece, then cut a replacement on-site by VIN. Combined service runs $150 to $300 depending on key type.
We have multiple tool sets for different cylinder depths. In 95% of cases we extract successfully. If the cylinder itself is damaged from the broken key forced in deeper, we replace it on the same visit. See our Ignition Repair page.
Yes. Door cylinders, trunk locks, and glove box locks all use similar extraction tools. Same process as ignition, same price range.
Push-to-start vehicles do not have a traditional ignition cylinder, but they do have door locks and trunk locks where a key blade can still break. We extract from those. The push-button start itself does not have a key slot.
