One van for the fob, the car key and the front door in Powder Springs

For car keys, key fobs, and house and business locks in Powder Springs, GA, 4Keys Locksmith sends a mobile technician at any hour of the day or night. The business is registered in Georgia as 4Keys Locksmith LLC with the Secretary of State, carries insurance with The Hartford, is ALOA-trained, and holds NASTF VSP authorization for dealer-level key work. A van sent from Brookhaven comes to the curb, and the dispatcher tells you when before you hang up.

4Keys has no counter or workshop to visit, which matters most when the car will not start: the key cutting machine, the programming equipment and the lock parts come to the vehicle, the model explained on how a mobile locksmith works. The dispatcher asks what happened, quotes the job before the van moves, and adds the after-hours surcharge only for calls between 9 PM and 7 AM local time, and on Sundays and federal holidays. Our published rates sit on the pricing page, and the phone is answered in Spanish as well as English.

Deprogrammed or Damaged

A fob that lost its registration and a fob that broke are two different repairs

Inside most fobs sit two separate electronic jobs. One is the remote keyless entry transmitter, RKE for short, which sends the lock and unlock commands by radio and draws its power from the coin cell in the fob. The other is the identity the immobilizer checks before it lets the engine run: a transponder chip in a key head, or on a push-button car the proximity smart key of a PEPS (passive entry, passive start) system. Either half can fail while the other keeps working, so a fob that "died" can be a flat coin cell, a registration the car no longer holds, or a board that stopped working.

The car tells you which half is in trouble. If the buttons do nothing but the engine still starts, the identity is fine and the radio side or its cell is the suspect; the battery checks are on key fob not working. If the security light stays lit or the engine refuses to run, the car has stopped accepting that identity. That light is the same signal the manufacturers use during programming: on the GM keys in STRATTEC's catalog it goes out once a new key is learned.

Here is where the two repairs split. A fob in sound condition, never soaked and with no history of cutting out, that has only lost its registration is registered to the car again so you keep the fob you own, or, if you prefer, replaced by a new fob programmed on the same visit. A fob that has quit before or got wet is not revived: 4Keys programs a brand-new fob in its place, covered by the 4Keys warranty, on the same visit. The long version of this decision is on deprogrammed or broken fobs.

Bring every fob you own to the appointment. Several registration routines rewrite the car's whole key list: STRATTEC documents a GM relearn for push-button cars that, when no recognized fob is present, takes about 30 minutes and erases every earlier fob. Module work can pull the fobs into the job too; Ford's recall notice for the 2020 Escape body control module states that two key fobs are required for the repair. Fobs that are present get registered together, and the ones left in a drawer do not stop working behind your back.

Re-registering happens beside the car using dealer-level programming software, which 4Keys reaches through its NASTF VSP credential; before any of it, the technician matches your title or registration to a photo ID bearing the same name. Ordered a replacement fob yourself? If the FCC ID, frequency and part number on it line up with what your car takes, it gets programmed too, as explained on programming a fob bought online; the service page is smart key and fob programming.

Fob and Remote Types

How different fobs get registered: examples from the key catalogs

Years are copied as printed in the STRATTEC catalog. Which route your own car takes is settled from its year, make and model when you call.

Powder Springs Car Keys

Beyond the fob: the rest of the car work, at the car

Everyday makes lead: Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Nissan, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, GMC, Ram, Jeep and Dodge, with European models covered too. Each card says what the job involves and what speeds it up.

Car door shut on the keys

Air wedges, long reach tools and Lishi picks are among the non-destructive entry tools used; the door and its lock decide which. Tell the dispatcher whether the keys sit in view, in the ignition or in the trunk; the last is a separate trunk lockout job. More on car lockout service.

A spare, a new key, or no key left

A spare made from a working key is the short job, covered by car key duplication. With every key gone, the VIN leads to the factory key code, a blade is cut to it and a fresh transponder is taught to the immobilizer, which is the all-keys-lost process; the route for your model year is settled on the first call. Service page: lost car key replacement.

Ignition that sticks or spins

A key that binds, turns only partway or spins freely points at the ignition lock cylinder, the blade, or the linkage to the switch. Worn wafers and a failed actuator pin are separate repairs, so the cylinder and the key are both checked before a quote. See ignition repair and when the key will not turn.

Key snapped off

Extraction tools pull the snapped blade from the ignition or door lock rather than prying at it. Save both halves: the bitting on the blade guides the new cut, and the transponder in the head may still be usable. Details on broken key extraction and a snapped key in the ignition.

Replaced module, no start

A newly fitted BCM, immobilizer unit or engine computer has to be introduced to the car's keys before the engine will run. Some makes also ask for a security PIN first, a subject our Doraville page takes apart. Tell the dispatcher which part was changed and bring every fob. See module programming.

Work trucks and company vans

Pickups and vans get spares, fobs and all-keys-lost keys where they are parked, one after another in a single visit. Have each VIN ready, and dispatch asks for the documents that fit the case. More on fleet and van key programming.

European and luxury makes

Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen keys go through the same dealer-level access, part of coverage for Korean, Japanese, American, British, German and Italian makes. Some keys are on the van; others are ordered first, and the dispatcher says which. See luxury key programming.

A fob you already bought

Read the FCC ID and part number off the fob or its listing when you call. A match is programmed at the car; a part that does not fit is swapped for a new fob that does, under the 4Keys warranty. Background: whether locksmiths have dealer software.
At the House in 30127

At the house: getting in, changing who has a key, and new hardware

What each residential job involves and what to tell the dispatcher first.

Home lockout, any door

Whatever is on the door, knob, lever or deadbolt, gets opened by working the lock once the technician has confirmed you live there. A key that is lost rather than locked inside can be made useless with a rekey during that visit. See residential locksmith service.

Rekey after moving in

New pin sizes go into each cylinder, the previous keys stop turning it, and the lock body stays mounted. Setting several doors to one key is part of the same job; tell the dispatcher how many exterior doors there are, garage entry included.

New lock or added deadbolt

Tired hardware gets swapped out, and a deadbolt can be added above a knob-only latch. If the door was never bored for one, it is drilled and fitted with a strike plate; mention whether a hole is already there.

Keypad and app locks

A smart deadbolt drops into the hole the old one used when the footprints match, and it leaves programmed with your codes. A door that has to be pulled shut for the bolt to throw gets its strike adjusted first. Bring your own lock or ask for one, and say the model if you already bought it.

High-security cylinders

On a patented or restricted keyway, additional keys are ordered through the lock maker's authorized route instead of being cut at a hardware store, which keeps you in charge of how many exist. Name the doors and any brand you prefer, and say whether they should share a key.

Late at night

A lockout at 2 AM is handled like one at noon, with the price given on the phone first. Leave a porch light on if you can and say which door you are at, so the technician walks to the right one. Night work falls under emergency locksmith service.
Shops, Offices, Warehouses

For shops, offices and warehouses: control over who opens which door

The commercial work, and what the technician needs to know before arriving.

An employee left with a key

Each lock that key could open gets rekeyed, and the new keys go only to the people still on staff. Listing those doors ahead of time shortens the visit. More on commercial locksmith work.

Master key system

One key for the owner, others limited to a department or a single room, the whole hierarchy written into a key chart, with the blanks on a restricted keyway. Planning notes are in the planning a master key system.

Keypads and card readers

Staff entrances move from metal keys to PIN codes, cards or fobs. Revoking a departing person's credential leaves everyone else's untouched, and models with an audit log record each entry.

Push bars on exit doors

New exit devices, a push bar that jams, a door that fails to latch behind people, or an outside pull with its own key cylinder. The door's width and whether it is steel, wood or aluminum decide the hardware.

Aluminum and glass shop fronts

Aluminum-framed glass doors have a thin stile, so the lock is a narrow mortise body with a hook bolt that grabs the frame, turned by a mortise cylinder. That cylinder can be rekeyed or swapped on its own. A photo of the door edge sent ahead shows which body and cylinder to load.

Staff locked out after hours

The person responsible for the premises gets back in at night or on a Sunday, and when a key is missing, the locks it fits can be rekeyed on that same trip. Say which door and what hardware is on it.
Where the Van Goes

Finding your car or door in 30127, the one Powder Springs ZIP code

Every Powder Springs street address sits in ZIP code 30127, and that ZIP stretches well past the city limits into unincorporated southwest Cobb County. The whole of it is covered, so a 30127 mailing address is all the dispatcher needs to route the van.

Powder Springs has no interstate exit of its own, so the road you are on is the best locator. US-278, the C. H. James Parkway, passes west of downtown on its way between Austell and Dallas. Macland Road (SR-360) comes in from Hiram and continues as Powder Springs Road toward Marietta. From I-20, the route runs north from the Thornton Road exit, which sits in Lithia Springs. Name the road and the nearest cross street.

At a house, say whether the car is in the garage or on the street, because a car parked inside a locked garage adds a door to the job. At a gated apartment community, give the gate code or wait at the gate. At a business, say whether the job has to wait for closing time. A car left at a trail parking lot, such as Silver Comet Linear Park on Richard D. Sailors Parkway, is reached like any driveway: give the lot, the car and its color.

FAQ - Powder Springs Fob, Key and Lock Questions

Fobs that stopped after a battery change, fobs that got wet, keeping the old fob or buying a new one, one fob dead while the other works, how long a relearn takes, and several cars in one visit.

Start with the new cell, not the programming. Check that it is the exact type printed on the old one and that it sits the same way up. Then try the car: if the engine still starts and only the buttons fail, the radio side needs attention; if the security light stays on, the car is refusing the key and it needs to be registered again. Either way, 4Keys can finish the job at the car.
The documented causes are work done on the car, not the fob wearing out its memory. A replaced body control module or immobilizer module has to be programmed to the keys again, and some registration routines erase every fob that was not present when they ran; STRATTEC describes a GM relearn that does exactly that. If a module was replaced or another key was programmed recently, mention it on the call.
It depends on the fob. When the case is intact, it never got wet and it never cut out before, re-registering it is the sensible repair and no new part is needed. When it has failed before or been soaked, 4Keys programs a new fob under warranty instead of reviving the old one. The dispatcher prices both on the phone so you choose before the van leaves.
It can keep working for a while, but water damage is the history that makes 4Keys replace a fob rather than re-register it. A new fob is programmed at the car and carries the 4Keys warranty, and, where the car’s system allows it, the wet one is erased from its memory so it no longer counts as a key.
It points that way. If the second fob still locks, unlocks and starts the car, the car is accepting keys, and the trouble sits in the one fob: its coin cell, its registration or its circuit board. Bring both to the appointment anyway, because some registration routines rewrite the whole key list and the good fob has to be present to stay on it.
It depends on what the car still recognizes. On GM push-button cars, for example, STRATTEC documents two routines: with a recognized fob present another one is added directly, and with none left a relearn runs about 30 minutes and clears every earlier fob. Give the dispatcher the year, make and model and how many fobs still work, and you hear what to expect for your car.
Yes. Line the cars up, keep the papers for each one within reach, and give the dispatcher the year, make and model of each so the right fobs and blanks are loaded. They are done one after another in a single visit, and every fob that belongs to each car should be there.
Yes. Your VIN gives the technician the factory key code, a blade is cut to it beside the car, and a new transponder or smart key is registered with the immobilizer at the car, where it is parked. Give the year, make and model on the first call and the dispatcher confirms the route for that vehicle.
Yes. The same van carries tools and hardware for house lockouts, rekeys, new deadbolts, smart locks and high-security cylinders, and for business rekeys, master key systems, access control and panic bars. Count the doors involved when you call.
