One key away from being locked out. Make the spare now.

A spare cut today is $50 to $300. The same key after all-keys-lost is $100 to $900. The math is in your favor.

Car Key Duplication

Copy, clone, or duplicate. What the difference is.

Duplication and cloning sound the same but they are not. Duplication cuts a new physical blade that matches the original. Cloning copies the electronic transponder signal from your existing key into a new chip blank, so the new key works with your immobilizer without reprogramming the vehicle. For most spare keys, you need both: a cut blade plus a cloned chip.

Cloning is preferred over fresh programming when you have a working key, because there is no vehicle session, no risk of de-syncing the original, and no need to fetch OEM data. The new spare is effectively a twin of the original. This is also why having a spare matters: cloning costs $80 to $200, but all-keys-lost programming costs $100 to $900.

If you have lost all your keys and need a new one from scratch, see Lost Car Key Replacement. If you need pairing only (no cutting), see Car Key Programming.

How It Works

Five steps from original to spare

  1. 1

    Identify key type

Tech verifies if the key is plain metal, transponder, or smart proximity fob.

  2. 2

    Blade cut

Laser or sidewinder cutter copies the blade pattern from the original key to the new blank.

  3. 3

    Transponder cloning if chip key

Cloning tool reads the original key's chip signature and writes it to the new blank.

  4. 4

Smart fob pairing if smart key

For proximity fobs, the new fob is paired to the PEPS module via OBD-II.

  5. 5

    Function test

We verify the new key starts the engine, locks, unlocks, and operates the trunk if applicable.

Duplication cuts a new physical key blade that matches the original. Cloning copies the electronic transponder signal from your existing key into a new key, so it works with your immobilizer without reprogramming the vehicle. We do both, often together for a complete spare.
Range: $50 to $300 depending on key type. Plain metal duplicate (no chip): $15 to $40. Transponder key duplicate with cloning: $80 to $200. Smart proximity fob duplicate: $200 to $400. Way cheaper than the dealer and way faster.
15 to 30 minutes for most plain metal and transponder keys. 30 to 60 minutes for smart proximity fobs because of cloning and pairing. Mobile, on-site, no shop drop-off needed.
Yes, that is the whole point of cloning. We copy the existing key's transponder signal onto a new chip blank, so your vehicle's immobilizer recognizes the new key as the same one. No vehicle programming, no OBD-II session, no risk of de-syncing the original key.
Yes. Cloning requires the original working key as the source. We read its transponder signature in 2 to 5 minutes, then write it to the new blank. The original key is not modified or de-activated.
Yes. European luxury spare keys require NASTF VSP authorization, which we hold. Spare key for these brands runs $300 to $600 because of OEM hardware costs, much cheaper than the dealer route ($600 to $1,500).
Cost. A spare key cut today costs $50 to $300. The same key after you have lost your only one costs $100 to $900 because of the all-keys-lost surcharge and immobilizer reset code fees. The spare pays for itself the first time you misplace your primary key.
No. Cloning copies an existing authorized key's signature, so the manufacturer sees one continuous key signal in its data. The vehicle warranty stays intact.
Yes. Pre-2000 vehicles often have plain metal keys with no chip. We duplicate those by cutting the blade pattern only. Cost: $15 to $40.
