Volkswagen, Metro Atlanta

A VW locksmith on wheels, from a Jetta flip key to an Atlas fob

4Keys Locksmith serves Volkswagen owners in Metro Atlanta, GA as a mobile VW locksmith on call 24/7 from Brookhaven, ALOA-trained and NASTF VSP authorized, insured by The Hartford, with 4Keys Locksmith LLC on the books of Georgia's Secretary of State.

A Jetta key or an Atlas fob is made in the car's parking space, since 4Keys keeps vans and no shop (why the locksmith comes to you). The van leaves from Brookhaven, and the arrival window for your street is given when you call. So is the price, before dispatch, with the after-hours surcharge for work between 9 PM and 7 AM local time, and on Sundays and federal holidays already counted; see published rates. The dispatcher speaks English and Spanish, and 4Keys employs Spanish-speaking technicians.

Volkswagen guards its keys with a numbered family of immobilizers and a car-specific PIN, and the PIN is where NASTF VSP authorization comes in: it is how 4Keys reaches dealer-level software for a VW, and the dealer software question is answered for every make on its own page. Training behind the work is documented on ALOA training. The sections below explain the system, list the models, and go through each job.

Put simply, the van covers keys for modern cars as well as the older flip keys: MQB keys with the Megamos AES chip, an internet-bought fob that is new and the right part, a fresh fob with the 4Keys warranty when the old one has died, and fleets of company Volkswagens keyed in one trip. All of it happens at the car, with no shop in between, and with dealer-level software reached under NASTF VSP rather than a trip to the dealer.

Immobilizer 3, 4, 5 and MQB

How Volkswagen decides a key belongs: immobilizer generations, the PIN, KESSY and MQB

Volkswagen numbers its immobilizers. Ross-Tech's VW Group diagnostics wiki places Immobilizer 3 in many 2002 and newer models and identifies each car by two numbers, a 14-digit Immo-ID and the VIN. Ross-Tech also says every Golf and Jetta built on the 1K platform uses Immobilizer 4. Through Immobilizer 4, adding a key needs the car's own PIN, the code that tells the immobilizer the person teaching it a key is allowed to.

Ross-Tech's Immobilizer 4 key matching page sets the rules a locksmith works inside. Each key has to be new, or already adapted to that very car, so a key pulled from a different VW cannot be carried over. The car holds up to eight keys. On the Passat (3C), at least one original matched key has to be present, and the page notes that new keys are ordered by VIN at the VW dealer. Where a VW Group car has KESSY, the keyless system Ross-Tech's pages tie to the immobilizer, its key matching procedure for Immobilizer 3 cars with Kessy keeps the same discipline: no more than eight keys, each one new or adapted to that car before, and a PIN of four or seven digits.

Immobilizer 5 is where the independent references stop: Ross-Tech states it does not support Immobilizer 5 procedures. Which US models carry it is not something the published references settle, so the car's VIN, given on the call, does that. The MQB platform brought a Megamos AES transponder, listed as ID49 and also known as ID88, and a transponder catalog places the Golf Mk7 from 2013 to 2020, the Jetta from 2019 and the Atlas from 2018 on MQB.

VW keys have long been dealer keys. STRATTEC's 2008 Transponder Guide lists the 2002-2008 Jetta, the 2002-2006 Golf and the 2002-2005 Passat only as a dealer key, EZ number HU66T6, with no aftermarket blank to clone, and a transponder catalog marks the 2009-2018 Jetta, the 2008-2015 Golf and the 2007-2015 Tiguan as precoded dealer keys with an ID48 chip. Either way the key ends up as a part made for VW and adapted to your car, work 4Keys does with dealer-level software under NASTF VSP; the dispatcher says on the call how the key for your model is sourced. The online half of VW Group key work, the FAZIT PIN service and component protection, is laid out on the Audi locksmith page. 4Keys meets both conditions of that FAZIT route, NASTF VSP authorization and a workshop registration with Volkswagen and Audi, so the PIN for a new VW key arrives through Volkswagen's own channel; the programming runs on ODIS, the Volkswagen Groupthe programming runs on Volkswagen's own dealer software under a 4Keys subscription, apos;s dealer software, under a 4Keys subscription, using original (OEM) VW keys.

The blade is a separate question from the chip. Lishi's tool fitment lists put the lock keyway at HU66 on the Jetta from 2000 to 2017, the Golf from 2000 to 2015, the Passat from 2001 to 2016, the Tiguan from 2009 to 2017 and the Touareg from 2004 to 2016, and at HU162T on the Golf and Jetta from 2015 to 2021, the Tiguan from 2017 to 2021 and the Atlas from 2018 to 2021. A 2015-2017 Jetta or a 2017 Tiguan sits on both lists, so the technician reads the lock on the car before cutting.

Put together, a VW flip key is three parts doing three jobs. The blade, cut to the HU66 or HU162T lock, opens the door and, on turn-key cars, turns the ignition. The transponder in the head (ID48 on the precoded dealer keys a catalog lists, Megamos AES on MQB) is what the immobilizer checks against its stored keys. The remote buttons lock and unlock through a separate radio side. A key can fail on any one of the three, which is why the technician tests each before deciding what your Volkswagen needs.

VW Services

What a Volkswagen job looks like, service by service

From a Golf locked at the curb to an Atlas that will not see its fob.

Volkswagen lockout

The VW is opened with entry tools at the door, and a flip key left in the ignition or on the seat comes back to you once it is open. On a keyless Atlas or Tiguan, say where the fob is so the technician knows what to expect. A key in the trunk is its own case: trunk lockout. Service page: car lockout.

Spare VW key

A second key is cut to the lock and matched to the immobilizer with the PIN, and an Immobilizer 4 car holds up to eight. Because a key from another Volkswagen cannot be re-adapted, the spare starts as a new key. Do it before the last working key goes: on a Passat (3C), Ross-Tech requires an original matched key at the car for matching. See spare car key service.

No VW key left

With nothing left to copy, the blade is cut from the key code and the new key is matched to the immobilizer by the route your generation uses. Once you give the model and year, the job for your Volkswagen is confirmed on the call; every key lost explains the general case and lost car key the service.

Flip keys and fobs, bought here or online

A fob purchased online is programmed provided the fob is new and its part number, FCC ID and frequency are the ones your Volkswagen takes: a used one already adapted to another VW will not take. A healthy fob that lost the car is re-registered; a broken one gives way to a new fob, which the 4Keys warranty then covers (telling the two apart). Service: key fob programming.

Ignition switch and cylinder

On turn-key VWs the blade drives an ignition cylinder and a switch behind it. NHTSA campaign 23V-604 covers a switch on the 2019 Golf and the 2019-2020 Jetta that may fail in high temperatures. If the key turns stiffly, try the spare first: a worn blade and a worn cylinder feel the same from the driver's seat. A key that sticks or will not turn is explained in key will not turn, and the repair in ignition repair.

Broken flip key blade

A folding blade can snap at the pivot or inside a lock. Extraction tools free the broken piece from the cylinder, a fresh blade is cut, and the chip in the head can be tested to see whether it still talks to the car. See broken key stuck in the ignition and broken key extraction.

Module programming

When an immobilizer-related module or an engine computer is replaced, it must be taught the car and its keys, and on VW Group cars component protection is part of that. 4Keys handles it at the vehicle under NASTF VSP. See module programming.

Fleets of Jettas, Passats and Atlases

Companies running Volkswagens for sales staff or crews can have spares made car by car in one trip to their lot, with the list of VINs read to the dispatcher first. Keeping two working keys per car is what keeps a lost key a quick spare job instead of a stopped vehicle. More on that in fleet key programming.

Three NHTSA campaigns that touch Volkswagen keys and ignitions

Campaign 23V-604 covers the 2019 Golf and the 2019 and 2020 Jetta with a conventional ignition switch: the switch may fail, especially in high temperatures, and is replaced, a warning worth knowing in a Georgia summer. Campaign 19V-615 covers automatic Jettas from 2011 to 2018 and Golfs from 2015 to 2016 and 2018 to 2019 with a manual handbrake and keyless entry, where silicate on the shift-lever micro switch can let the key come out with the car out of Park; an extra switch and circuit board are installed. Campaign 18V-824 covers the 2018-2019 Atlas and Tiguan and the 2019 Jetta without keyless entry, which lack the key-in-ignition warning chime; the instrument cluster is reprogrammed, which implies those trims start with a turned key. Campaigns are carried out by a Volkswagen dealer, so ask one whether yours was done; the technician then deals with whatever is left on the key or the lock.

Service Area

South side or north side, the van comes to the Volkswagen and to the front door

From Brookhaven the vans cover all of Metro Atlanta, including the south side: the Georgia pages for East Point, College Park, Fairburn, Union City and Riverdale describe part of it.

Your Volkswagen is worked on wherever it waits: a driveway, an apartment lot, a hotel or office deck, the lot at work. A gate code or a deck level belongs in the first call, and so does the space number if the car is in a numbered lot. The documents a given case requires are asked for then, and the technician calling you back may ask you to photograph the key, the ignition or the label on the dash.

Locks for the home and the business ride in the same van. A house lockout, rekeying after a move, a new deadbolt or a smart lock is residential work, with metro detail on Georgia residential locksmith. Rekeying when an employee leaves, master key systems, card or keypad access control, exit devices and shopfront locks are commercial work, with metro detail on Georgia commercial locksmith. For the other European makes, the BMW, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz pages cover their own systems.

FAQ - Volkswagen Key Questions, Answered

Used keys, how many keys a VW holds, every key lost, ignition failures in the heat, a key that comes out out of Park, push-button or turn-key, keys bought online, the PIN and the Touareg.

No. Ross-Tech's key matching rules for Immobilizer 4 and for Kessy cars require every key to be new or already adapted to that same car, so a key that belonged to another Volkswagen will not be accepted. Start from a new key or fob; it is cut and matched to your car with the PIN, and the car holds up to eight keys in all.
Yes. The blade is cut by code and the new key is matched to the immobilizer by the route that VW generation uses. Say the model and year to the dispatcher, who confirms the job for that car and quotes it during the same call.
On a 2019 Golf or a 2019-2020 Jetta with a conventional ignition switch, yes: NHTSA campaign 23V-604 says the switch may fail, especially in high temperatures, and a Volkswagen dealer replaces it. If the campaign is done and the key still sticks, the cylinder or the key blade is checked next.
Campaign 19V-615 explains it for automatic Jettas from 2011 to 2018 and some 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golfs: silicate on the shift-lever micro switch lets the key come out with the car out of Park. A dealer installs an extra switch and circuit board under the campaign.
It decides which key you need. Campaign 18V-824 indicates that 2018-2019 Atlas and Tiguan and 2019 Jetta models without keyless entry start with a turned key, while keyless trims use a fob. The VIN read to the dispatcher settles which one your car has.
When it is new and its part number, FCC ID and frequency suit the car, yes. A used fob adapted to another Volkswagen cannot be matched. If the part is wrong, the dispatcher can quote a new one that fits.
It is the car-specific code that authorizes adding a key on Immobilizer 1 to 4 cars, and on Kessy cars it runs four or seven digits. You do not need to find it. The Volkswagen and Audi document for independent workshops describes the PIN being delivered online, straight to the car, for NASTF VSP registrants whose workshop is registered with Volkswagen and Audi; the Audi locksmith page covers that route.
The blade can be cut anywhere with the right blank, but the chip is the hard part. STRATTEC lists 2002-2008 Jettas and early Golfs and Passats only as dealer keys, a transponder catalog lists later Jettas, Golfs and Tiguans as precoded dealer keys, and MQB cars use a Megamos AES chip. In every case the new key has to be matched to the immobilizer, which a counter that only cuts blades does not do.
Not necessarily. Locking and unlocking is the remote side of the key; starting depends on the transponder chip and the immobilizer. Doors that answer while the engine refuses point at the chip side or at the ignition, which the technician tests before suggesting a new key. If the fob turns out to have failed, it is replaced with a new one that carries the 4Keys warranty.
Yes. Its key system is read from the VIN on the call, and the Lishi pick-tool fitment list gives the Touareg lock keyway as HU66 for 2004 to 2016; the blade itself is confirmed on the car before it is cut.

Key gone, fob ignored or ignition stuck? Ring before you tow the VW anywhere.

Have the VIN handy along with the model and year, and say whether any key still works. The dispatcher confirms the job and states the price, and a van leaves Brookhaven after that.

The price depends on the job and the components it needs; you get the exact total on the phone before the technician is sent. See our reference prices.
