On Audi's own route, a new key is not adapted on the word of whatever tool is plugged in. A key program document written by Audi and Volkswagen for independent workshops describes immobilizer adaptation as online PIN delivery: the factory tester connects over the internet to a database called FAZIT, and the PIN travels to the vehicle over a secure link, never displayed to the person doing the work. The same document opens the system to security professionals listed in the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional registry, with the workshop also registered with Volkswagen and Audi, and it states that a vehicle reported as stolen gets no adaptation at all.

Where the immobilizer sits depends on the generation. The Ross-Tech wiki, a Volkswagen Group diagnostics reference, says the larger Audis, naming the A5, A6, A8 and Q7, carry a separate immobilizer at address 05, Access/Start Authorization, and its page for the first Q7 (4L), built from November 2005 to 2015, lists that address. On MLB cars with BCM2, which Ross-Tech names as the A4 (8K), A5 (8T), Q5 (8R) and the A6, A7 and A8 (4G and 4H), the immobilizer lives inside the body control module J393, also called KESSY. Component protection is the second lock on the door. Ross-Tech states that it can only be learned or disabled with the factory tool over an online connection. For BCM2 cars it adds that immobilizer component matching and component protection both need GeKo access online, either at the dealer or through a pass-thru (J2534) device, and that replacing the module leaves immobilizer and component protection faults a generic scan tool such as VCDS cannot clear. A replacement module, new or taken from another Audi, stays in fault until that online step is done.

Newer Audis sit on MLB Evo: the Q7 (Typ 4M), the A8 (Typ 4N) and the second-generation Q5, whose production started on September 30, 2016. Ross-Tech notes its BCM2 procedure does not apply there, and Audi bulletin 2071336 from 2023 shows dealer key adaptation on the 2024 Q5 and A8 and the 2023-2024 Q7 running through the ODIS immobilizer test plan against Audi's backend systems, where a backend change once returned "Status: 13/Security access denied". On these cars a key is adapted with the backend in the loop, whoever does it.

That is the reason NASTF VSP matters on an Audi. Audi's document names the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional registry, together with a workshop registration with Volkswagen and Audi, as the way an independent locksmith reaches this access, and 4Keys Locksmith holds both: NASTF VSP authorization and its own workshop registration with Volkswagen and Audi. The PIN for a new Audi key therefore comes to the car through Audi's own channel, and the adaptation runs in ODIS, the dealer software Audi shares with Volkswagen across the VAG group, on a 4Keys subscription, with an original (OEM) Audi key. Owners have no shortcut either: published programming instructions for the 2017 Q7 and the 2024 Q5 say the remote has to be programmed by a qualified professional.
