Nissan Locksmith in Atlanta, GA: Chip Keys, Intelligent Keys and Remotes at Your Car

Nissan's immobilizer goes by NATS, and the programming tools that talk to it name its versions on screen. The 2013 Advanced Diagnostics manual for Infiniti and Nissan shows NATS 5, NATS 5 (CAN) KEY, NATS 5 (CAN) PROX and NATS I-KEY. Behind every label sits the same principle: a transponder in the key head, or the Intelligent Key itself, has to answer the car before the engine gets permission to run. What moves from one era to the next is the chip, the way a locksmith's tool is let into the system, and the key you carry.

The oldest keys in the current fleet are the NI01T and NI02T blanks, with a Texas 4D60 chip on the DA34 keyway, fitted by key vendors to the Altima 2000-2004, Maxima 2000-2003, Pathfinder 1999-2004 and Sentra 2000-2006. The NI04T followed: a Philips Crypto ID46 transponder on the NSN14 ten-cut profile, listed by UHS Hardware for the Sentra 2007-2019, Versa 2007-2018, Frontier 2005-2019, Rogue 2008-2013 and NV200 2013-2019, among others. Key suppliers state that the NI04T has no on-board transponder programming, and STRATTEC heads its Nissan remote procedures with a note that the transponder programs separately with a diagnostic tool. A chip key for a turn-key Nissan is therefore cut first and then registered through the diagnostic port.

Registration needs a PIN. From 2003, beginning with the Infiniti G35, Nissan used a random code: the locksmith reads a five-digit serial from the body control module (BCM) and converts it into a four-digit PIN. Modules in service from 2004 to 2012 can be read through the OBD port, while the earliest carry the code on a paper label. The conversion runs through the tool maker's software, a Nissan dealer or NASTF, and push-button cars of that system add one more step that releases the steering lock.

Nissan calls its proximity key the Intelligent Key. The first generation kept a knob in the ignition where a key used to go: the CWTWBU729 fob, ID46 at 315 MHz, is sold for twist-knob Rogues of 2008-2013 and Versas of 2007-2012. Push-button start came next, with the KR55WK48903 listed for the Altima 2007-2012, Maxima 2009-2014 and Murano 2009-2014. The Intelligent Key hides a mechanical blade released by a small lock knob, as the 2015 Altima owner's manual describes, and that blade turns the driver door lock if the fob battery is flat (a key fob that stopped working walks through the rest).

The 2013 Altima and 2013 Pathfinder with push-button start changed the access rules. The tool displays a 20-digit Out-Code; the In-Code that answers it is released by Nissan dealers and through Nissan's NASTF portal, nowhere else; the tester has to stay connected, because a fresh session produces a fresh code. Those cars hold four keys at most, and a key registered to one of them locks to that car and cannot be reused on another. This is the point where NASTF VSP authorization turns from a credential into the way a Nissan key actually gets made. CONSULT III plus, Nissan's dealer software, is part of the kit too, on a subscription 4Keys maintains, and the Intelligent Keys it registers are original (OEM) Nissan parts.

The 2020 and later Sentra added a security gateway. Locksmith Ledger reported in August 2022 that adding or deleting a fob on it means converting a 28-character PIN with Nissan software or through a Nissan dealer, and that the keys already stored are deleted along the way. Later smart keys, such as the KR5TXN4 with a Hitag AES chip at 434 MHz on the 2019-2022 Altima and 2020-2024 Sentra, are programmed by tool, and the vendor states that no on-board procedure exists for them. In the sources behind this page the registration logic is the same: the system erases every key and writes back only those present, and the 2015 Altima manual asks owners to bring all their Intelligent Keys, up to four. Gather every Nissan key you want working before the technician arrives.

The technician who registers a Nissan key carries lock hardware too.
