The Short Answer

Average Cost of a Locksmith for a Car

If you only read one section, read this one. Everything below is the same figures with the reasoning attached.

Car lockout

$75 to $150 day. $150 to $275 night and weekends.

Trunk lockout

$85 to $175 day. $175 to $300 night and weekends.

Broken-key extraction

$75 to $150 day. $150 to $250 night and weekends.

Car key, domestic

$150 to $250. Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia. Add $50 at night.

Car key, European luxury

$250 to $450. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Range Rover, Porsche. Add $50 at night.

All keys lost

$200 to $600. No working key exists, so the system is paired from scratch.

Car key duplication

$30 to $100. A spare cloned from a key that already works. Add $30 at night.

Ignition repair or replacement

$150 to $400. Add $75 at night.

Every number on this page is quotable before anyone drives to you

A price that only exists once a technician is standing next to your car is not a price, it is a negotiation you are going to lose. Ask for the total on the call, with the year, make and model. We give it, and it does not move on arrival unless the scope changes and you agree to the new total first.

Car Keys

Locksmith Car Key Replacement Cost

Car key replacement cost is not one number, it is three questions. Does a working key still exist, what brand is the vehicle, and is it day or night. Answer those three and the total is fixed before anyone leaves.

The first question is the expensive one. If a working key exists, the job is a copy: Car Key Duplication runs $30 to $100, plus $30 at night, because the key you already hold carries the credential and we clone it. If no working key exists, the job is a pairing: Lost Car Key Replacement runs $200 to $600, because the immobilizer has to accept a key it has never seen rather than recognise a copy of one it already trusts.

Brand sets the tier. Car Key Programming on Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia is $150 to $250. Luxury Key Programming on Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Range Rover and Porsche is $250 to $450, and Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Aston Martin key cards are $300 to $500. Night adds $50 to any of them.

The luxury tier is a tier because of access, not because of the metal. Manufacturer key security data is gated, and pulling it legally is exactly what NASTF Vehicle Security Professional authorization is for. A shop without it either turns the job away or goes around the factory method, and going around it is how a $250 key becomes a replaced module.

Key Fobs

Key Fob Programming Cost

Three different jobs get called key fob programming, and they are three different prices. The dispatcher works out which one you have on the call.

Clone a spare fob

Your current fob still works and you want a second one. That is duplication, and the price follows the fob: a cut metal blade with a transponder chip is the cheap end, a proximity smart fob is several times that. The dispatcher identifies which one your car uses from the year, make and model, and quotes the total on the call. See Smart Key and Key Fob Replacement and Car Key Duplication.
Quoted by fob type

Program a replacement fob

A fob the vehicle has never seen, cut and paired on-site. $150 to $250 domestic, $250 to $450 European luxury, $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards. Add $50 at night.
$150 to $500

Program with no working key

Nothing works and there is nothing to clone from, so the whole system is paired fresh. That is all-keys-lost programming at $200 to $600.
$200 to $600
Lockouts

How Much for a Locksmith to Unlock My Car?

Opening the car is the cheapest thing we do, which is exactly why the bait ads are written to win this call and then rebuild the invoice in your driveway.

Car lockout

Non-destructive entry at the vehicle. $75 to $150 day, $150 to $275 night and weekends, no mileage fee inside our coverage area. See Car Lockout Service.
$75 to $275

Trunk lockout

Trunks latch and lock differently from doors, so it carries its own line: $85 to $175 day, $175 to $300 night. See Trunk Lockout Service.
$85 to $300

Broken-key extraction

The key snapped in the door, trunk or ignition. $75 to $150 day, $150 to $250 night. Cutting the replacement is a separate line. See Broken Key Extraction.
$75 to $250
Rekeying

Cost to Rekey a Car

We do not publish a car rekey rate, and we are not going to make one up to fill a heading. Two different jobs get called rekeying a car. Here is how we tell them apart on the phone, and which published line each one falls under.

  1. 1

Tell us whether a working key still exists

That single answer decides everything else. With a key in hand, the work stays on the cloning and programming side of the list. With nothing that works, it becomes all-keys-lost pairing at $200 to $600, because the vehicle has to accept a key it has never seen.

  2. 2

Decide whether the goal is the cylinder or the credential

If the ignition itself is worn, sticking or was forced, the fix is mechanical: Ignition Repair and Cylinder Replacement is $150 to $400 during the day and carries $75 at night. If the ignition is fine and you simply want a lost key to stop working, the fix is electronic and happens during programming, where the old fob is deauthorized as part of the job.

  3. 3

Get the total before dispatch, not after

Because there is no published car rekey line, this one is scoped from the two answers above and quoted as an exact total on the call. It does not change when the technician arrives. If a company will quote you a flat car rekey price without asking either question, they are guessing, and the guess will be corrected upward in your driveway.

Day Rate vs Night Rate

Locksmith Key Programming Price

The night differential is published, not discovered on arrival. These are every automotive surcharge we carry. All-keys-lost at night varies with the vehicle and is quoted per job.

Programming, plus $50

Domestic, European luxury and ultra-luxury key cards all carry the same $50 night differential on top of their day range of $150 to $500.

Ignition work, plus $75

Ignition repair or replacement is $150 to $400 during the day and carries $75 overnight, because column work takes longer and cannot be rushed.

Duplication, plus $30

A spare cloned from a key that already works is $30 to $100 during the day and carries $30 overnight. It stays the cheapest line on the list either way.

FAQ - Automotive Locksmith Pricing

Got questions? We have answers. If you don't see your question below, call us anytime - we're available 24/7.

It depends which job, and every one of them has a published number. A car lockout is $75 to $150 during the day and $150 to $275 at night and on weekends. A spare cloned from a key that still works is $30 to $100. A new key cut and programmed is $150 to $250 on domestic makes, $250 to $450 on European luxury, and $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards. All-keys-lost pairing is $200 to $600. Ignition repair or replacement is $150 to $400. We quote the exact total on the phone before a technician is dispatched.
An average is misleading here, because the automotive range runs from $30 for a cloned spare to $600 for all-keys-lost pairing. The job most people are actually asking about is a daytime car lockout, which is $75 to $150. Anything that involves a key being cut and programmed starts at $150 and is set by the make of the vehicle, not by a citywide average.
$75 to $150 during the day and $150 to $275 overnight, on weekends and on holidays. That covers dispatch, travel inside our coverage area, non-destructive entry tools and the technician time. A trunk lockout is its own line at $85 to $175 day and $175 to $300 night. If the key snapped off in the lock, broken-key extraction is $75 to $150 day and $150 to $250 night.
The same published rate everywhere we dispatch: $75 to $150 during the day, $150 to $275 at night and on weekends, with no mileage fee inside our coverage area. What moves the total is the time of day and whether a key has to be made afterwards, not how far you are from the depot. Pick your area on the locations page and the dispatcher quotes the total on the call.
Between $30 and $600, and one question decides where you land: does a working key still exist. If it does, we clone a spare for $30 to $100. If it does not, the vehicle has to accept a brand-new key, which is all-keys-lost pairing at $200 to $600. In between sits standard programming: $150 to $250 for domestic makes, $250 to $450 for European luxury, $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards. Night adds $50 to any programming job.
Making a key is two operations, and the price follows both. Cutting and cloning from a key that already works is duplication at $30 to $100, plus $30 at night. Cutting and programming a key the vehicle has never seen is $150 to $250 on domestic makes, $250 to $450 on European luxury, and $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards, plus $50 at night. We do it at the vehicle, so there is no tow.
$150 to $500 for a new key cut and programmed on-site, set by the make: $150 to $250 domestic, $250 to $450 European luxury, $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards. If every key is lost, the figure is $200 to $600, because the immobilizer has to be paired from scratch rather than copied from something that works. Add $50 for night and weekend programming.
A replacement fob cut and paired on-site is $150 to $250 on domestic makes, $250 to $450 on European luxury and $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards, plus $50 at night. A spare fob cloned while your current one still works is duplication at $30 to $100, plus $30 at night. If nothing works at all, it is all-keys-lost pairing at $200 to $600.
There is no separate reprogramming line on our price list and we are not going to invent one. In practice the job lands in one of two published rows. If a working key or fob still exists, it is duplication work at $30 to $100, plus $30 at night. If nothing works, it is all-keys-lost pairing at $200 to $600. The dispatcher settles which row applies on the phone, before anyone is sent.
$150 to $250 for domestic makes such as Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia. $250 to $450 for European luxury such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Range Rover and Porsche. $300 to $500 for ultra-luxury key cards including Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Aston Martin. Each of those carries a $50 night differential. All-keys-lost programming is quoted separately at $200 to $600.
Yes, it is on this page and on the main pricing page, and it is the same list the dispatcher quotes from. Car lockout $75 to $150, trunk lockout $85 to $175, broken-key extraction $75 to $150, key programming $150 to $500 depending on the tier, all-keys-lost programming $200 to $600, ignition repair or replacement $150 to $400, and car key duplication $30 to $100. Night and weekend rates are published beside each one.
We do not publish a car rekey rate, because two different jobs get called that. If the ignition cylinder itself is worn or was forced and has to be repaired or replaced so a key turns properly again, that is $150 to $400 during the day and carries $75 at night. If the ignition is fine and the goal is to stop a lost key from working, that happens inside programming, which is $150 to $250 domestic, $250 to $450 European luxury, or $200 to $600 when no working key is left. Tell us which of the two you are in and we quote the exact total on the phone.
