From the late 2000s on, key vendors list Smart Keys, the Lexus proximity fob, for the ES, RX, GX, IS and LS models on this page, so the real work sits in the electronics: which Smart Key generation the car runs, which of Lexus's dealer bulletins covers that year, and whether a working fob is still in your hand. The emergency blade inside the fob is cut afterwards, to the door lock.

Lexus Smart Key generations, the Lexus reset bulletins and the emergency blade
Lexus parts sit in Toyota's family, but the Toyota key rules do not carry over: Toyota's reset bulletin T-SB-0057-18 lists no Lexus model, and Lexus files its own key bulletins. The Toyota chip letters are explained on the Toyota locksmith page; what follows is the Lexus side.
Before the Smart Key, the RX 350 of 2007 to 2009 used a bladed key with a Texas Instruments 4D68 chip, cut on the LXP90 blade, paired with a separate three-button remote (FCC ID HYQ12BBT, 315 MHz). Lexus's own bulletin L-SB-0007-13, its Smart Key Specifications, lists Smart Key and Smart Entry systems on the ES 350 and IS 250 from 2008 to 2013, the GX 460 from 2010 to 2013 and the RX 350 from 2009 to 2013, transmitting at 312.15 or 314.35 MHz.
The first Lexus smart keys carry an 80-bit chip, which vendors label "Texas ID 4D 60 80 bit". The HYQ14AAB fob covers the ES 350 from 2007 to 2011 and the IS 250 from 2006 to 2011, in two circuit-board versions split at 2009; the HYQ14ACX covers the RX 350 from 2010 to 2015 and the GX 460 from 2010. Both run on a CR1632 coin cell. The 128-bit generation (Texas "H-8A") came next: HYQ14FBA for the ES 350 2013 to 2018, the IS 250 2014 and 2015 and the IS 200t 2016 and 2017; HYQ14FBB for the RX 350 from 2016; HYQ14FLB for the RX 350 2020 to 2022, with 2020 and 2021 also listed under the FBB, so the FCC ID on the fob decides; HYQ14FLD at 434 MHz for the RX 350 2023 to 2025; and HYQ14FBF for the LS 500 2018 to 2021. All of these take a CR2032. Key vendors state that the FBB and FBF fobs have no on-board programming procedure: professional equipment does it.
Lexus sets out its dealer procedures for registering and erasing keys in two bulletins. L-SB-0025-14, dated July 7, 2014, covers model years 1997 to 2015, including the ES 350, GX 460, IS 250 and RX 350. Its reset opens the immobilizer to new keys once every master key is gone, and it wipes out each key the car had accepted until then; the dealer's Techstream produces a seed number, Lexus's TIS returns a pass-code, and dealer management must approve each request. It adds a caution: Techstream cannot reset certain early immobilizers housed in the engine computer (ECM).
L-SB-0014-18, the Smart Key Immobilizer Reset and Add/Remove Key bulletin, covers the ES 350 from 2019 to 2021 and the LS 500 from 2018 to 2021, and it is stricter. A key erased by a Smart Code Reset cannot be used again on any vehicle, a key taken off with the add/remove procedure can never be reused, and the Undesignated Key Permanent Erasure utility removes only the keys that are not present. Vendors sell the LS 500 fob as non-reusable, while the earlier Lexus smart keys are sold as reusable once the immobilizer is reset. Both bulletins describe Lexus's own dealer procedures; for your car, the dispatcher reads the exact model year and the fobs you hold before saying how the visit runs.
The Lexus Smart Keys listed here carry an emergency blade for the door. The TOY48 inserts come in a 40K series (69515-30300) for the ES 350 of 2007 to 2009 and the RX 350 of 2010 to 2015, whose emergency key vendors also call LX40, and an 80K series (69515-50260) for the IS 250 of 2008 to 2012. From 2018 Lexus moved to a high-security emergency blade (69515-33150 and 69515-50310) on the ES 350 and GX 460 of 2019 to 2023, the LS 500 of 2018 to 2023 and the RX 350 of 2023 to 2025. NHTSA's recall records, scanned for these Lexus models, show no campaign touching the ignition, the keys or the immobilizer. 4Keys Locksmith reaches the security access these cars require under its NASTF VSP authorization, and the dealer software it runs on them is GTS+, Global Techstream Plus, held on a 4Keys subscription and paired with original (OEM) Lexus Smart Keys.
Before a Lexus fob is added: put every fob you own in the car
On a 2019 to 2021 ES 350 or a 2018 to 2021 LS 500, Lexus's own bulletin describes an erasure utility that removes the keys not present, and a key removed from those cars can never be reused. So gather the spare from the drawer, the one with the cracked case and the one that stopped working, and keep them at the car. Read the FCC ID printed on the back of any fob you have; Lexus changed fobs inside a single model run, and that number tells the technician which one to bring. When the technician rings you back before driving out, a photo of the fob, front and back, may be requested.
