Another key while one still works

A few Jeep manuals still print a two-key owner procedure: the 2008 Liberty, the 2008 Grand Cherokee and the 2017 Patriot let an owner holding two valid keys add more, up to eight. The 2016 Grand Cherokee, the 2018 Compass and Renegade, the 2019 Cherokee and Wrangler and the 2022 Grand Cherokee manuals send key programming to a dealer instead; 4Keys Locksmith programs those spares at the Jeep with a tool and the PIN. No Jeep key left

The older Jeep manuals tell an owner with no programmed key to contact a dealer. At the Jeep itself, any blade is cut to code and the replacement key or fob is enrolled with the vehicle PIN, obtained through NASTF VSP on 2014 and newer models. For a push-button Jeep, the year and model are talked through on that first phone call, where the dispatcher also says which documents the case needs. Background: every key lost.

Flip keys, FOBIKs and proximity fobs

Per Jeep's manuals, once a fob is married to one vehicle it stays with that vehicle, which rules out a second-hand fob from another Jeep; an unused fob with matching FCC ID, frequency and part number is the one to buy (fobs bought online). When your own fob has given out, its replacement is new and warrantied by 4Keys, a case set apart on the broken or deprogrammed fob page.

Ignition and the start button

A blade-era Liberty, Compass or Grand Cherokee has an ignition lock cylinder, repaired under ignition repair. On a push-button Jeep, a Key Not Detected message can come from the fob, its battery or the RF hub software, as the bulletins below show; the fob checks are in key fob not working.

A blade broken in a lock

The SIP22 blade of a Wrangler or Renegade flip key, or the emergency blade from a Grand Cherokee fob, can snap in a door lock. Extraction tools pull the stub; keep the pieces, which help the technician cut the next one. See broken key extraction.

RF hub, WIN or engine computer replaced

Until a fresh module is introduced to the Jeep and its fobs, starting and remote functions stay incomplete; 4Keys handles that introduction on site, through dealer-level software accessed under NASTF VSP. Security Gateway & RF Hub

The Security Gateway and the RF hub: how a modern Jeep key is programmed through authorized access

Jeep keys follow the same FCA lineage as Dodge and Chrysler keys: Sentry Key transponder blades, then the FOBIK in a wireless ignition node, then push-button start. Those generations are laid out on the Dodge & Ram locksmith page. This section covers the layer FCA added on top of them: who may talk to the immobilizer, and through which door.

In the early years, part of the answer sat with the owner. The 2008 and 2011 Grand Cherokee manuals and the 2008 Liberty manual say the original owner was given a four-digit PIN at purchase, needed for a replacement key at an authorized dealer. According to Locksmith Ledger, FCA afterwards shut locksmiths out of those SKIM and PIN codes. On Stellantis vehicles from 2014 onward, the PIN turned into something bought for one specific VIN, by a person with a current NASTF VSP credential, and it stays active for 12 hours after purchase.

From 2018, FCA closed the diagnostic port itself. Locksmith Ledger describes a Security Gateway Module, fitted to Chrysler-group vehicles beginning in 2018, that blocked direct communication to and through the OBD2 port and limited outside tools to basic diagnostics. ALLDATA reports it on some FCA vehicles from 2018 on, Jeep included, but publishes no Jeep model list, so the VIN is how the dispatcher finds out. Without authorization, a scan tool gets basic data; clearing codes and other advanced functions require a tool registered with AutoAuth.

4Keys Locksmith works on gateway-equipped Jeeps through that authorized route: AutoAuth registration to open the gateway, and the NASTF VSP credential to buy the PIN. 4Keys also holds a subscription to wiTECH 2.0 (wiTECH being the dealer software FCA's Jeep notices name) and works with original (OEM) Jeep fobs and keys. Ways around the gateway are not part of the job, and none is described on this site. The credential is explained at NASTF VSP authorization, and the question of dealer tools at do locksmiths have dealer software.

FCA's bulletins name a radio frequency hub module, the RFHM, on these push-button Jeeps: the 2014 and 2015 Grand Cherokee, the 2014 to 2016 and 2020 Cherokee, the 2015 to 2017 and 2019 to 2021 Renegade, and the 2021, 2023 and 2024 Grand Cherokee, and recall 26V-559 names the radio frequency hub on the 2024 Grand Cherokee. The owner's manuals of the 2018 Renegade and the 2019 Cherokee and Wrangler describe their immobilizer in plain words: a key fob, a keyless push button ignition and an RF receiver.

That hub is why module work on a Jeep needs a plan. On the 2022 Grand Cherokee, FCA's notice Z23 requires the two fobs to be in the cabin together when a new hub is synced; if just one is there, the absent fob will still start the engine, yet its buttons stay inactive until that fob has spent five minutes inside the moving vehicle. On the 2018 and 2020 Grand Cherokee SRT with Keyless Enter-N-Go, bulletins 08-092-23 and 08-094-23 describe an RFHM anti-theft update, which 08-094-23 applies only when the owner asks for it and warns that no further fob can be programmed afterward; adding a key then means a replacement RFHM at an earlier software level. Mention either one before the visit.

When It Is Not the Key

Jeep starting faults that look like a key problem and the bulletins behind them

Each item comes from an FCA bulletin, a recall or a Jeep owner's manual. Bulletin and recall repairs are dealer work; telling them apart from a key fault saves you a wrong purchase.

Key Not Detected, 2014 and 2015 Grand Cherokee

Bulletin 08-100-15 describes a 2014 Grand Cherokee that will not start and shows Key Not Detected with the fob pressed against the start button; 08-079-15 REV. A covers 2015 models built on or before July 26, 2015. In both, the remedy is an RFHM reprogram.

Renegade no-start and keyless faults

On the 2015 to 2017 Renegade, bulletin 08-084-17 ties code B1053-64 to a false Key Not Detected. On the 2019 to 2021 Renegade, bulletins 08-065-21 and 08-056-23 cover a vehicle that may not start or cannot be switched off with the keyless button.

Fob not seen inside a newer Grand Cherokee

Bulletin 08-020-23 covers the 2021 Grand Cherokee with Fob Left Vehicle messages after remote start and no-starts. Bulletin 08-169-24 REV. C covers 2024 models built on or before May 13, 2024 that do not detect the fob inside or start only with the fob pressed to the ignition node.

Interference from added electronics

FCA STAR case S2008000113 REV. A (April 2021), written about intermittent Key Not Detected messages, asks technicians to look for low-frequency interference from add-on LED bulbs and wireless gear, on any vehicle. Mention any added accessories on the call.

What the theft light is saying

Jeep manuals describe two patterns. A lamp that remains lit once the bulb check ends signals an electrical fault in the system. A blinking lamp says the key or fob was rejected, and the engine quits two seconds later.

Aftermarket remote starters

The same manuals warn that the Sentry Key Immobilizer system is not compatible with some aftermarket remote starting systems. If one was installed, tell the technician before any key work begins.

14V-438: a knee against the key

On the 2005 to 2007 Grand Cherokee and the 2006 to 2007 Commander, a driver could knock the key out of RUN with a knee. Interim advice was to leave only the vehicle key on the ring; the remedy replaced the ignition switch.

The 2008 and 2010 Grand Cherokee ignitions

Recall 14V-567 replaced the ignition switch and FOBIKs on the 2008 Grand Cherokee, whose fob might not return to ON after START. Recall 10V-200 covered a binding WIN latch on 2010 models. The full text of both sits on the Chrysler locksmith page.

The fob battery is one cause, and the fob is not the sole suspect. FCA bulletins tie Key Not Detected on some Grand Cherokee and Renegade years to RF hub software that a dealer reprograms, and an FCA case points to interference from aftermarket LED bulbs and wireless equipment. The technician tests the fob at the Jeep and tells you which it is before any part is sold.

On a Sentry Key Wrangler, the transponder blade is cut from its code and programmed at the vehicle with a tool and the PIN. On a 2018 and newer Wrangler with the smart flip key, the route for that year is set on the same call, through authorized access where a gateway is fitted and the PIN bought under NASTF VSP.

No. The owner's manuals state that a fob stays with the first vehicle it was programmed to, and the 2019 Cherokee, 2019 Wrangler and 2022 Grand Cherokee books add that it cannot be repurposed. Buy an unused fob whose FCC ID, frequency and part number fit your Jeep, and that one can be programmed.

FCA bulletins 08-092-23 and 08-094-23 cover an RFHM anti-theft update for the 2018 and 2020 SRT with Keyless Enter-N-Go, and 08-094-23, which applies it only at the request of the owner, warns that afterward no additional fob can be programmed; adding one requires replacing the RFHM with one at an earlier software level. Tell the dispatcher about the update, and the job is quoted along that module route.

That pattern, a blinking theft lamp and an engine that cuts out after two seconds, is how Jeep's manuals describe a rejected key; a lamp that stays lit after the bulb check means something electrical instead. Try the spare. If the spare runs the engine, the first key's chip is at fault and a replacement is programmed at the Jeep.

Not with every system: the manuals state that the Sentry Key Immobilizer system is not compatible with some aftermarket remote starting systems. If one is installed, say so on the call, because it changes how the technician approaches key programming.

Three recalls touched it: 14V-438 on the 2005 to 2007 Grand Cherokee (a knee could knock the key out of RUN; ignition switch replaced), 14V-567 on the 2008 (FOBIK might not return to ON; switch and fobs replaced) and 10V-200 on the 2010 (binding WIN latch; WIN replaced). Look up the VIN on nhtsa.gov, and leave any open recall to a dealer.
