Acura used three blade families and three chip families in the years covered here, and a first-generation MDX key and a TL key from the same showroom era are not interchangeable. The table below gives the key behind each model and year band, and the section after it explains what each one means when a key is copied, made from nothing, or replaced by a smart key.

Megamos MDX, ID46 TL and TSX, ID47 TLX: and the HO03 high-security blade between them
The first-generation MDX key is the odd one out. It is an edge-cut HD106 key whose chip, per CLK Supplies, is a Megamos ID13 with a fixed code, the same family transpondery lists for the MDX from 2001 to 2006. STRATTEC catalogs a cloneable alternative blank for it, so a working MDX key of that era can be copied, and its key codes fall in the 5001 to 8442 series.
The 2004 to 2006 TL and TSX moved to a Philips ID46 chip, the "V" transponder, on the HD111 blank (Silca HON58R) that Acura numbered 35113-SEC-A01. Its code series is also 5001 to 8442, and CLK states plainly that no on-board programming exists for it: key programming equipment is required. On the TSX the changeover to the next blank came in 2007 or 2008 depending on the source, which is why the blade in hand decides those two years.
From 2007 the MDX, RDX and TL, and the TSX after its changeover, share the HO03-PT "ID46 High Security Key", cut on the HON66 internal-track profile that Silca calls HON66EHP. STRATTEC lists its blank, 5907553 (OE 35118-SDA), with codes in the K001 to N718 series, and CLK again lists no on-board procedure. The practical meaning is that an ID46 Acura key, whether a spare or a first key with none left, is programmed to the immobilizer with equipment the van carries, and a high-security blade is cut by code when there is no key to trace. Remotes and smart keys sit on top of those chips. The 2009 to 2014 TL and TSX were sold with a flip key, the MLBHLIK-1T, that folds an HO01-type blade into a remote head with an ID46 chip at 314 MHz and a CR1616 cell. The 2009 to 2014 TL also had a smart key, the M3N5WY8145, with an ID46 chip and a CR2032, in two versions: 72147-TK4-A71 for Driver 1 and 72147-TK4-A81 for Driver 2, and the number printed on your remaining fob shows which version you hold. The MDX of 2007 to 2013 used its own ID46 remote, the N5F0602A1A, on a CR1616.
The TLX brought a newer chip, the Philips ID47, in a proximity smart key. Vendors list the KR5V1X at 315 MHz for the 2015 to 2017 TLX and the KR5V2X or KR5V21 at 434 MHz for 2018 to 2020; both take a CR2032. Two fobs can look identical and transmit on different frequencies, so the FCC ID stamped on the case is how yours is identified. Lishi's HON66 decoder lists door and trunk coverage on the TLX from 2015 to 2018 and on the TL from 2007 to 2014, which is how a door lock on those Acuras is read when a key has to be cut for it.
Honda's chip letters and Honda's ignition history are explained on the Honda locksmith page, including recall 12V-573, which takes in certain 2003 to 2006 MDXs built through August 30, 2006. Where an Acura key needs dealer-level security access, it comes through 4Keys Locksmith's NASTF VSP authorization, and that dealer-level access spans six origins: American, German, Japanese, Korean, British and Italian. On an Acura, that access means i-HDS, the dealer software Honda uses across its Acura line too, which 4Keys runs under a paid subscription, paired with original (OEM) Acura keys.

Acura smart key with a dead battery: what still works, and what to try
The transponder chip inside a smart key carries no battery of its own: the car's antenna powers it when the fob comes near. A dead cell therefore silences the buttons and keyless entry, while the start function can still work if the fob sits where that antenna can read it. Look in your Acura owner's manual for what it says about a weak or discharged key battery and where to hold the fob. If the fob carries a mechanical key, that key turns the driver's door cylinder. Then change the cell: a CR2032 in the TL and TLX smart keys, a CR1616 in the TL and TSX flip keys. If a fresh cell changes nothing, read key fob not working, and the Alpharetta page goes through the whole dead-battery sequence.
